There are small events that, when taken separately, can seem ordinary and insignificant. However, taken together, these seemingly random events can cause a domino effect that may lead to the downfall of whomever may be unfortunate enough to witness them. This domino effect, commonly called a coincidence, is a factor that can lead to the downfall of us if we aren't careful

Exactly what these events are, or even how many there may be, is a mystery too vast and complex for anyone to decipher. Not only that, but it doesn't take many of these happenings at once to cause tragedy. God forbid every single event were to happen at the same time.

These events seem ordinary. A bird call, a power-outage, a storm starting, a church bell ringing...

... Or maybe, not a church bell, but a clock tower. Just like the one in the middle of the courtyard at my school.

I had been sitting in the lobby of the auditorium at school. My aunt was running late to pick me up from rehearsal, and I wasn't comfortable sitting outside all alone. It was nearing nine o'clock.

I'd check my cell phone every minute or so, just to see if she had called or sent me a message. One time, I noticed that I no longer had service inside the building. I sighed, realizing the inevitable. I'd have to go outside.

Bear in mind, the events that followed all took place in the time it took the clock to chime nine times.

I stood up at the same time the first chime went off. I walked to the doors of the auditorium, but as I was headed outside, the light directly above me popped. The lightbulb shattered in a bright flash of light, barely missing me as I walked underneath. The explosion startled me, and I jumped for the door, stumbling as I went. The door opened under the pressure, and I was thrown into the cold February night. I fell to my knees, scraping a hole in my jeans, and started breathing heavily. Maybe it was the frigid air, which I wasn't prepared for, or the short burst of adrenaline from stumbling so erratically through the door, but I found I couldn't stand up.

When I did come to my feet, the clock was still chiming. I counted backwards in my head, trying to figure out what chime the clock was on. I looked up, clearing my head.

That's when I saw it. There, on the sidewalk, only a few feet away from me. A cat, part black, part white. One of the cat's eyes was noticeably larger than the other. I couldn't tell if it was a trick of the light or some bizarre... well, I don't even know what, but the one large eye seemed to grow and swell, until the cat's features were swallowed by the blackness. I stood and stepped forward, approaching the cat. Suddenly, the creature snapped back to normal, and fixed me with its gaze.

Its eyes were glowing bright blue.

Another trick of the light? I didn't stick around to see, because the cat suddenly stood and bolted.

I started sprinting towards the other end of the courtyard, the end where my aunt would be picking me up at any moment. I ran as hard as I could, but I made one mistake in my escape.

I looked back.

The cat was running along in an impossible manner, almost as if it were floating. It steadily got closer and closer to me, no matter how I varied my path or speed.

I was so busy looking behind myself that I didn't notice that, by varying my path, I ran into a wall.

In my moment of weakness, the demonic cat leaped.
