"Wake up Jared, we have work to do."

Jared moaned as he awoke from a deep sleep. His first sight was his sister, Donna.

"Okay, Donna."

Jared and Donna were brother and sister. Jared is fifteen years old and his sister is 19. Their parents had passed away when she was sixteen, and he was twelve. It was tough for both of them, especially Jared. He was not mature with the situation, and often took his anger out on various walls and household items. They were both placed in a foster home for two years and soon after Donna was 18, she bought a cheap house for them. Her parents didn't die of natural causes either. They were shot down by southerners. The great war had been going on between the southerners and northerners for years now, about six. It was a very stupid war, but you would expect that if the war started for a stupid reason.

The war started six years ago. The southern ruler met up with the northern ruler and they discussed recent riots in their own part of the land. Southerners and northerners were already fighting, due to internet blogs insulting each other. Someone shot the northern ruler in the shoulder. He declared war immediately on regaining consciousness. The only place left that wasn't under attack was the area that Donna and Jared lived in and a few others. Normal everyday citizens became victim to this war and fought, but Donna and Jared stayed out of it.

"Hand me the ax, will you Jared?"

"Sure thing, Donna."

Jared went to grab the ax, but a hand reached for his. Jared glanced up at the man.

"How's it been goin' 'round here?"

"Leroy, I haven't seen you in forever!" Jared exclaimed.

Leroy was a friend of Jared's parents. He used to fight in the war, but after he heard Jared's parents died, he fostered kids, including Jared and Donna.

The three sat down over coffee and discussed the past happenings.

"So, how's it been since I been fosterin' you kiddos?" Leroy asked.

"We've been getting by. How's fostering going?" Jared asked back.

" I actually retired from fosterin' about a week ago, that's pretty much why I'm here with you kiddos." Leroy said. "I'm thinkin' about stayin' here, if you aint' mind. Do ya'?

" No, I don't mind. I'm just wondering what happened to the kids!" Donna said

"Oh, them. They're in the truck right now. I'll go get em'." Leroy responded.

"Oh god!" Donna yelled out loud.

"Just pullin' yer' tail, sweetheart!" Leroy said. " Most of them were 18 or older, but they were also almost all related, so they moved out, and I sold the house. Got about $300,000 in return. I came here to care for y'all.

"Well, thanks for caring about us Leroy!" Jared said.

"The guest room is upstairs, I mean YOUR room is upstairs." Donna told Leroy, and they exchanged smiles.

Later that night, Jared was reading a book on the revolutionary war, and all the horrible deaths America had experienced. He was growing tired and decided to go to sleep. He switched off the light and tucked himself in. Yawning, he laid his head on the pillow, and closed his eyes.

"Jared!" A distant voice yelled.

"Jared, wake up, wake up!" It was getting closer.

"JARED! WAKE UP!"

Jared instantly awoke to a nightmare, he could here explosions outside.

"Come on Jared, no time to explain. We need to get in the truck! NOW!"

He grabbed her hand and followed her to the front door where Leroy was waiting.

"Come on, come on." Leroy said. "Here's the plan, we're goin' to run to the truck when I open the door, okay?"

"Okay" the two responded.

"Now the truck is about ten feet away. Don't worry, we'll make it." Leroy told them.

"GO!" Leroy opened the door and they ran to the truck. Bullets were flying past them.

They got in the truck, put in the keys, and rode off.

Jared looked back for one last time, and never again would he see his house.
