Mask of Truth

You know these stories called "Creepypasta"? Well, they always talk about a game or something someone finds in an odd store or something.

Well, you know what? I don't believe in them. Lost Silver? Ben and Majora's Mask? Oh come on. No one can believe in that. Just hacked games an a too scared boy or girl to play them.

At least... that's what I thought before all this happened. You will say "Sure man, you were just afraid, and you found something strange in a game" No... it was not like this...

Since I was a kid, I loved the game "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time". Unfortunately, my dad sold it long time ago, and I was so upset for it. Years passed until I found a cartridge of OoT in an old store. I was "Oh well, why not?!" and I bought it.

What a mistake...

What a foolish mistake...

Once I arrived at my home, I just started to play. It was Friday, the first day on week I can play without worrying about homework. So I started to play.

The usual title screen, with Link going with Epona trough Hyrule's fields, with the nice but sad song as background. Nothing strange.

I pressed the start button, and I found the usual three files of the game. Two of them were empty, and the first one had a game saved. I thought "Well, I can start the game, or see what the last player made in that one".

The game had the name "Link". It's normal if you want the character to be named with his original name and not with an original name like "AAAAA" or "Askjgh". I started the game outside Ganondorf castle, when Link is adult. I looked around, all was normal. I looked in my start menu, and I found the normal items you have when you just wake up: all your childhood weapons. Also, I found the Mask of Truth in it. It seems the last player made all the masks thing. Perfect, is boring for me.

I didn't notice at first look, but after I give it a second look, I found something strange: the Mask of Truth was able to be used while being adult. I thought it was a bug, but I found funny to use it. Link put the mask on his face as I pressed the C button, and he looked really funny.

I exited the Ganondorf's Castle and went trough the market place. I still had the mask on, because I really like it going like this. What a mistake...

First, these... I called them zombies, all right? I passed trough them, running, and they didn't have time to chase me. I exited the market and I went into Hyrule's field. I felt so good being here, because it's my favourite place in the game. And I decided to call Epona and ride a bit.

But for my surprise, a text box of Navi appeared.

"Navi: You can't play the ocarina wearing the mask, Link!"

Oh well, this was unusual, but I agreed with it, and I pressed the mask C button. But the mask was still on my face. I tried to play the ocarina again, but Navi kept telling me the same. After some tries, I gave up and just started to walk trough the field. After a bit, Navi hid in my hat, and I had the calm I wanted.

After a bit, I saw Lon Lon Ranch in the distance. And then, I slapped myself. "Of course idiot! You just started being adult. How can you have Epona or Epona's song??"

But here is when the weird things started. I went into the ranch, only to find Ingo sitting on the floor, in front of the ranch where horses usually are, but it was empty. I found it strange, but I went close to Ingo, and pressed the A button.

Instead of the normal talk, I heard him sobbing, and then the text box message was like if Ingo was just thinking.

" Ingo: "This is... just a nightmare... it's just that... no one is here, because it's a nightmare..."

I found this extremely weird, so I tried to press the A button again, but he kept giving me the same message, so I gave up. But once I tried to exit the ranch, I heard an scream, and Ingo was pointing at me.

"Ingo: The mask!!! It's the mask!!!"

After this, my Mask of Truth suddenly started to shine, and without moving anything on my controller, Link took off the Master Sword and stabbed Ingo, killing him.

I was all like "WTF??!!" and then Link looked at Ingo's corpse, and started to move normal again, you know, when you leave him quiet and he looks around him or adjusts his pants. Anyway, it cost me a bit to move him again. The first thought that came into my mind was "This cartridge is hacked..."

But I kept playing. I went to Kakariko Village, the first place you have to go to get the shot and then go to the forest temple. But every time I wanted to talk with someone, I just saw their thoughts. All of them were scared about something.

And once I took a step far from them, the kept yelling at my mask. Then the same, Link by himself takes his sword and kills them. But for some reason, I enjoyed this. Every character he killed, I enjoyed it more and more. Also, I really liked how the Mask of Truth shone every time a character screamed.

After an hour of play, killing characters and finding some items, I arrived at Kokiri Forest. Here, the kids screamed the same when they saw my mask, but this time a text box appeared.

"They are not adults. They are kids. Just little kids. That's why I'm going to let you decide if you want to leave or kill them."

And then, a "Yes/No" option appeared. At first I hesitated. Even if it was a game, they were kids. Every kid can be scared of a mask like this one. But then I remembered that they had seven years to grow up in mind.

"Oh come on, they are adults in kids body. And this is funny. Let's go with it"

I chose "Yes", and Link started to kill the poor little Kokiri. One after another, the children fell dead onto the floor, killed by my sword. I remember enjoying all this. When all of them already died, the mask shone again, and another text box appeared.

"So you choose cruelty. That's a fun way to take things, but... they were just children, and... they were your friends..."

For the first time, I felt guilty. I mean... I killed Link friends...

Suddenly, I put the camera closer to Link's face, and I was able to see something coming from his eyes trough the eyes of the mask. Tears? They were tears? Link was crying?

Of course he was crying. He didn't want to kill his dear friends, but the mask made him to do it. I felt bad. I felt very bad. But again, I chose to keep going, and I went into Lost Woods.

As normal, I found Mido. But this time, he was on the floor, sitting, like Ingo in the Ranch. He looked up at me, scared. I could notice how Link was looking down at him, and I could feel the sadness in him.

"Mido: Why you did that? We didn't do anything to you..."

Once again, the mask shone, and a new question appeared.

"He's just a kid, but he treated you very bad in your childhood. What do you want to do? Kill him or leave him alone?"

Alone... of course, I knew Saria would become the sage of forest, and Mido would left behind with all these... corpses...

My answer was quick. I chose kill him. And once again, Link took his sword and killed the little kid.

After the Temple of the Forest, instead of telling me all the text Saria usually tells you, she just looked at me with sad face, and gave the medallion of forest to me. When the screen went white, Saria said.

"Saria will always be..."

Here there was a long pause.

"...your friend..."

I felt really bad at this point. I mean, I killed all Link friends, and then Saria still wanted to be my friend...

I stood in front of the new Deku Tree, but he was sad. He just said "..." And let me go. My mask didn't react in all this time, so I almost forgot about it.

I passed the other temples, but this time I chose to not kill. The other sages greeted me with the usual text. But I kept thinking about Saria...

And then, I was again in front of Ganondorf's Castle, where all began. Once more, the mask shone, and this time it said something strange to me.

"You chose to not kill after the Forest Temple. But you already killed the children people in Kokiri Forest. Now I know what your truth is."

My truth? Surely it meant Link's truth, but no. Once again, the weird things started.

"I know you are not in the game. I know you are outside my world. I know you made Link do horrible things because I did them first. This means..."

After this, and for my horror, Link threw himself into the lava lake under the castle.

The screen turned BLACK, and then nothing happened.

I was thinking about this for some time. I could not forget the people I killed, the tears of Link in the middle of his little place where he spent the day of his childhood, I remember Saria's face and Mido's face...

But I don't get what the mask said before Link fell into the lava's lake. Oh well...surely is nothing serious. Just now I'm standing on my window, ready to throw myself onto the floor, 4 floors down mine.

Why am I doing this? I don't know, it just the mask did it with Link and...oh no...

As I'm falling, I can hear a voice in my mind.

"This means... you'll do anything I do"

I can see the shine of the mask again, and then...

BLACK.
