The Mirror Beast

I woke up, my head feeling as if it was stuffed with cotton and then roasted over a flame. I tried to remember what had happened, but only a remnant of a memory flashed through my head, and it was a small conversation:

"So are you sure, Lacy? I don't know if this is a good idea..."

"Why don't you shut your face Sophie. We've been talking about it for weeks. Why should we chicken out now? We have everything we need, after all."

"I guess so..."

"Ugh...my head..."

I looked up, and saw Lacy rubbing her temples, sweat coating her face as she stood, her legs wobbling weakly.

"It...It worked..."

I blinked, confused. What worked? I looked at the giddy expression on her face, and her mouth was split into a big grin as she bounded around in...smoke? I stood up, my legs nearly giving out as they took my body's weight. Breathing heavily, I looked around and saw that we were in a forest surrounded by smoke, and the trees seemed to move on their own, as if they were alive. Shuddering, I looked back to Lacy, who was still grinning widely.

"Wh-What worked Lacy? What the hell did we do?" I whispered, fear gripping my chest with a filthy hand.

"You don't remember? Really? That's shocking, considering what happened to Russell, y'know" she said, running her hand along a tree, her eyes wide with glee and curiosity.

"R-Russell? What happened to him?"

"Damn. That is a shame you don't remember, but it's probably best anyway."

Anger seized me suddenly, and I grabbed her by her shoulders, my nails digging into the flesh deeply, drawing blood.

"What. Did. I. Do?"

Lacy's breathing hitched as her eyes widened, curiosity replaced with fear as I lightly shook her. I tried to remember what I had done, but nothing came to mind, except the conversation snippet, but what did I do to Russell? I needed to know.

"Y...You had to k...kill him...so we could....get...get here...."

I...killed someone? My blood went to ice as I released her shoulders, and leaned against a tree, my breathing going irregular. No no no no no I couldn't have I can't even kill a stupid fly so how...no she's lying...she can't....no no no no...

"Lacy..pl...please tell me that....that isn't true...." I whimpered, tears building up in my eyes as another tinier, louder memory rushed through my head:

"NO PLEASE I DON'T WANT TO DIE NO NO NO PLEASE SOPHIE PLEASE DON'T DO THIS NO I HAVE SO MUCH TO LIVE FOR I-"

*shink shink shink*

"I'm sorry..."

"Sophie? Are you-"

I lunged for her, grabbing a fistful of her hair, and began to slam her face against one of the trees as she screamed in agony, but I didn't care as I kept ramming her face over and over, at least until it was only a mass of red meat and white bone. I breathed heavily as I sat back, looking at the mangled face of Lacy, not caring that she was dead. I killed once, so I suppose I'd be able to do it again. Looking around, I only saw more trees and smoke, that is, until a figure limped out of the smoke, and I was appalled by what I saw.

A man, at least a husk of one, with long jagged fingernails coated in faded red stains, gleaming yellow teeth that were sharp and dripping with bright white saliva, and his skin hung off in loose grey folds, and it swung in the still air.

"Hello, little Sophie. Did you enjoy killing her?"

His voice sounded like gravel, and I winced as he stood over me, the smell of rot and mold coming off of him in waves. I nearly gagged as he smiled again, showing his rows of fangs.

"I...who are you?" I asked, looking up at him, making contact with his dull silver gaze, but he merely chuckled, and it sounded like a saw cutting through a tree.

"Sorry, but I cannot answer that question, for I have been trapped here for so long I cannot remember my name, but what I can tell you is that you are like me, whether you accept it or not."

"How am I like you? My skin is normal, and my nails are short."

"You like to kill, just like me. Long ago, I was put into the mirror you and your "friend" found as a punishment for not listening to the preacher of Roniasa Colony. I was starved, then left to die in my father's basement, tied to a bed for being too slow and lazy. I was bound to the mirror, and I can never leave. For a long while, I was supplied with sinners and livestock, but lately, I have been starving for food, and now I have some, and I thank you for that."

I only stared as he (it?) began to rip apart Lacy, his teeth pulling off her flesh from her bones as easily as boiled ribs. I kept watching, even though my mind told me to look away, but it was so...mesmerizing.

"So...Sophie...What will it be? Will you live here with me, or will I have to kill you?"

I contemplated my fate: out of this...mirror...was a world of pain and misery, with a toxic boyfriend and too busy parents, but here, was solitude, and a friend...that was like me.

"I'll stay."
